Hi there, it’s me again. Your friendly neighborhood curmudgeon. Maybe I’m not a curmudgeon, really (I tend to imagine an old guy with a white mustache and a disheveled and ill-fitted tattered suit sitting around saying, “in MY day…”) But I do tend to find myself grumping a lot about New Adult romance always being classified as erotica. And, well, that just isn’t fair. You’ve probably gotten the message by now, though, right? New Adult romance runs the gamut from clean to inspirational, from explicit to fade-to-black, and includes genres like historical and paranormal. Definitely not all erotica.

Maybe I’m on my soapbox again because I just released the first two books in the Girlfriends of Gotham series, and another author assumed that the books would be super steamy since I said they were New Adult. In reality, all the sex happens behind closed doors because it isn’t the main focus of the stories. They’re romantic comedies, about a group of girlfriends figuring out their lives in New York City. They’re definitely sexy, but they just aren’t entirely about sex, that’s all. And writing light romance with a heavy helping of comedy was So. Much. Fun!

In fact, it’s made me want to find other NA rom-coms to stock my bookshelf with, and I thought I’d share the list with you. There are tons of great sexy romps out there that will crack readers up, and they range widely in the sex department, by the way. Here's the start of my list -- feel free to add on in the comments!

Men and Martinis – Delancey Stewart (had to throw that in there, of course!)

Whew! My TBR is getting big... what other laugh-out-loud NAs can I add?

  1. Thanks for the list! I'm not into the super sexy stuff myself, and do find it hard to know what NA would appeal to me.
If you haven't read Cassie Mae's NAs, you should. They're pretty darn funny too. :)

  3. I love the Sookie Stackhouse series! Definitely LOL worthy at times. :-) I enjoy dark comedy.

There's tons of room for NA to grow, which is why I enjoy writing and reading it so much.

    1. Those were such fun books. I read them at a time when I had heard nothing about them, and didn't know what to expect. I was completely addicted!

  4. This probably doesn't help, but I have a friend who did proofreading in college. When I had her read over a science fiction manuscript, she said she thought science fiction was just like The Jetsons.

    1. Hey Mark! It does go to show that all categories and genres get stereotyped, especially by those who don't read them! I'm more vocal about NA for two reasons -- one, I write it... two, it's been misconstrued a lot by people who DO read it! :)

  5. Yay! I'd take a humorous romance over a kinkfest any day. Just my preference. :D

  8. Great post! Also, Do you have your blog on bloglovin? I haven't been able to use my eamil subscriptions effectively and I am missing tons of blog posts. I am trying to switch over to bloglovin, because I have noticed that I visit a lot more blogs that way. And I want to keep following your blog! :)
