I was just thinking the other day and I realized one of the reasons I know New Adult spec fics could be successful is because New Adult spec films are. But Traci, you may say, there is no New Adult film genre. Well, technically you are right, but many fantasy and sci-fi movies follow the basic principle of New Adult: someone going off into the world alone for the first time and discovering themselves. So, I'm going to give a list of my top five favorite New Adult films.

Star Wars
What is Star Wars but a story about a boy leaving home for the first time to find himself and learn about his past?

Jupiter Ascending
This is a pretty new movie, but already in one of my top movies. A young woman finds out she is the reincarnation of a space princess and finds love.

The Princess and the Frog
Tiana was already working hard in life, but turning into a frog gave her the freedom to learn more about herself and reaffirm what she wants out of life. Getting a cute prince as a husband was just the cherry on top.

Lord of the Rings
Frodo leaves home (see that reoccurring theme?) and bands with his friends, new and old, on an adventure and a learning more about himself.

Every superhero movie
I swear every superhero movie is about somebody discovering something about themselves and working hard to reconcile their new knowledge with what they knew before. Every new adult goes through this process, so basically new adults are all superheros!

Share in the comments movies that you think share the New Adult principles or would make great New Adult novels.

  1. This is all sooooo true. Lots of scifi and fantasy movies have already had New Adult themes. Now the books have to catch up.

    1. Yes! I would love to see NA novels have the same abundance of Sci-fi and fantasy as movies do.

  2. And the new Star Trek movies have reimagined the characters as New Adults.

    1. I was this close to adding the new Star Trek movies to the list. They definitely fit the category.

  3. I like the idea that New Adults are superheroes. But I would go as far to say that most fairy tale rewrites are a form of New Adult. That's why I think speculative fiction could be the best representative of New Adult because of the endless possibilities. Also, leaving home to start college or a new job is so much better when you also get to save the world as you know it.

    1. I personally wouldn't say that most fairy tale rewrites are New Adult because so recently it was a popular Young Adult trope. I would love to see more fairy tale rewrites in NA, though. I agree that leaving home for the first time is so much cooler when you are leaving and you save the world.

    2. I see what you mean. I should have said the originals. So many are about going off on your own for an adventure and then discovering yourself or leaving home to get married or start a new profession. It always sounded more NA than YA to me.

We LOVE hearing from you!
