Dear friends,

I write to you today not as an NA Alley founding member, nor as one of its former contributors, but as someone who fought alongside you in the literary trenches. Together, we struggled for years to legitimize the New Adult category. When it didn’t take off with St. Martin’s contest in 2009, we launched an independent resurgence in 2012. When the world took notice and publishers finally stepped up, we pushed the envelope by incorporating more genres under our banner. The point is, we are determined readers, writers, bloggers, and industry professionals. We don’t settle for anything less than the best. Not in our books...

...and not at NA Alley.

I won’t bore you with the site’s history (you can read it for yourself here), but I will tell you there are big changes coming. Real ones—not just a team shuffle and a brand facelift. Please take a moment to check out all we have in store for you:

Administrative Changes

We’re losing four members this summer—Victoria H. Smith (co-founder), Jaycee DeLorenzo (co-founder), Juliana Haygert (co-founder), and Lynn Rush/Reese Monroe (former contributor). In recent months, you may have come to know them as “Team Blog”. They arranged posts from April onward and ran the NA Crush Tournament. During that time, they worked and resided within the category’s promotional epicenter.

Those of us staying on at NA Alley would like to wish them the very best of luck in their future endeavors. They will surely be missed.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

From now on, we want you to think of NAAlley.com as a transparent hub for the community. You’ll understand our schedule, organizational hierarchy, and the features. You’ll be able to make your voice heard now more than ever.

To accommodate this shift, three board members have been elected—E.J. WESLEY (former contributor), S.J. PAJONAS (new asset), and CARRIE BUTLER (me—a.k.a. the co-founder without cool initials in her name). We’ll make executive decisions and try to keep everything moving smoothly, but we’re going to rely on plenty of amazing members...

Since we consider New Adult a diverse category, we will soon be implementing ambassadors and representatives. They will be your source and point-of-contact for anything within their specialized genre or niche, i.e. blog posts, events, questions, etc. Sometime in the next few weeks, we’ll upload bios for everyone on board, and let me tell you, this is one diverse and enthusiastic group. Bestsellers and trendsetters. Industry experts and community leaders. It’s going to rock!

Note: We’d also like to incorporate outside focus groups and event committees from time to time. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, feel free to drop us a line!

Response to Feedback

You didn’t expect me to address this year’s tournament, did you? Well, like I said, we’re all about transparency now. While I didn’t have any dealings with the tourney aside from graphics, I can tell you I spoke with some very upset readers afterward. They weren’t happy with the match-ups, the rules, and—most frequently—the graphic content that appeared in some advocate’s pleas. What started out as something fun had suddenly turned into finale night on American Idol.

I wish I had an explanation for you regarding this. I wasn’t privy to the decision-making process. But what I can do is assure you that the NA Crush Tournament is a massive undertaking, demanding hours and hours of work. The people who staffed this event are human and did the best they knew how at the time. End of story.

Moving forward, we’re looking at a shift for the better: a more inclusive theme, eligibility changes, match-up categories that reflect a more even playing field, a shift in format from tournament style to award ceremony, etc. The proposed restructure might turn some of you off, but this is for everyone’s entertainment. We want our readers to be comfortable and supportive of one another. This could very well be a way to achieve that.

A Better Hub

Our website is cool now—a newsletter; places to list sales, freebies, industry news, and new releases; a catalog of NA reads; a publishing guide; a directory of NA book bloggers; survey results (infographic); and, of course, a link to our blog. Now imagine it ten times better. We’re doing a major expansion and thanks to S.J. Pajonas’ web magic, we’re finally going to get the site set up the way we always envisioned it.

Stay tuned...

In the Meantime

Let us know what you’d like to see at the new NA Alley! Features, resources, events, etc. We’d love to hear from you. :D

  5. I don't think the tourney should let repeat characters be nominated. Otherwise, we'll have guys like Rush and Travis in it for years to come because let's face it, there will always be a novella or never ending series featuring them. And I don't like the idea of ambassadors for the guys, because then it just turns into a blogger popularity contest....

I love NA, real NA and I hope to see more great stories!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Neredya! The tourney will be completely different next year- and not just focus on guys :) As Carrie said, we'll be going more of an award ceremony route. It won't resemble the past tourneys. We hope you'll check back with us- change is coming :) -Lg

  7. I'm very interested in NA, as that's what I write. I haven't visited here very often, but I'd like to see an occasional posts outlining the guidelines for NA. I've looked around and don't always find the answers to all my questions.

Good to see new blood here. I know E.J and Carrie. Looking forward to seeing what you do.

  8. I'm always haunting in the background (reading & sharing, if not commenting), but I want to say here that I appreciate and respect that NA Alley has always embraced necessary change for the betterment of the community. It's both refreshing and inspiring, and it builds trust among community members when such a strong influence continuously aims to be positive and supportive of everyone involved -- from the big names to the smaller voices. I'm still proud to have been a founding member of such a great hub; there's always still more work to do, and I love that y'all are never afraid to do that work.
