Happy St. Patrick's Day, guys! If that's not enough for you, here's another reason to celebrate...

The History of NA Alley

NA Alley launched in May of 2012, just before what some are referring to as the "NA Boom". At the time, our goal was simple: We wanted to make New Adult happen.

See, as many of you know, the category used to carry quite the stigma. If you pitched a story with a college-aged protagonist to an agent or editor prior to mid-2012, one of two things usually happened:

1. You got the "New Adult isn't a thing" lecture.
2. You were asked to age said character up or down to fit the mold.

It was a tough time to persevere in the industry. Those fighting to legitimize NA were few and far between. That's why seven of us (Victoria H. Smith, Jaycee DeLorenzo, Carrie Butler, Juliana Haygert, L.G. Kelso, Summer Lane, and Bailey Kelsey) banded together. We knew our reach would expand if we coordinated our efforts, and we could finally give a voice to the readership we knew existed.

That first year was all about growth. Several self-published NA titles hit bestseller lists, bringing the category discussion back to the forefront of industry-driven minds. What people scoffed at in 2009—back when St. Martin's Press coined the term "New Adult"—was now being praised as the next big thing.

We sought to help NA writers and readers however we could, i.e. creating a catalog of New Adult titles, organizing pitch contests with agents and editors, working with publishers to announce new lines, writing articles, hosting giveaways, etc. Somehow, without us noticing, our little blog had become a central hub for all things NA.

As such, we were blessed with many opportunities. Interview requests came in from Book Business Magazine, USA Today, RT Book Reviews, and All Parent Magazine. We even spotted our definition of New Adult in places like HuffPost books. It was unbelievable.

In July of 2012, E.J. Wesley came to us with the idea of organizing an NA-centric Twitter chat. He spearheaded the project, and we all took turns moderating. What started out as a casual conversation grew to become a regularly trending topic every Thursday night. #NALitChat was a social force to be reckoned with.

Our second year in the blogosphere brought change. Bailey left to focus on her education, and we acquired two new contributors: E.J. Wesley and Reese Monroe (Lynn Rush). By that time, we were so overwhelmed with correspondence, we had to find a livesaver coordinator—Diana Long. And just in time, too...

We collaborated with YA Sisterhood to host the first NA Crush Tournament in June of 2013, and the response was huge. To call the NA audience engaged would be an understatement. One match, alone, had 100,000+ hits!

Now here we are, nearly two years after we launched NA Alley, closing in on a million hits and ready to bring you another big announcement...

Anticipated FAQs:

Q: Will I have to bookmark/check both sites?
A: No, starting at our domain (www.naalley.com) will still allow our readers to access/navigate to either side. Or vice versa. We’re just making it easier to find things, given the large amount of information. Please note that you can still follow the blog and subscribe to the newsletter separately.

Q: How can I submit my book, link, proposal, etc?
A: Individual requirements will be listed under the appropriate tabs.

Q: Are you guys breaking up?
A: We like to think of it as dividing and conquering... kidding. ;) We're not breaking up; we're just working in teams.

Q: When are you posting the results of the 2013 New Adult survey?
A: Delighted you asked! They're actually going in the first issue of the newsletter. Sign up here. :)

Q: I have a book that's releasing and/or having a price-based promotion in April. Where can I let you know, so you can consider it for the newsletter?
A: This forum! The blog will also have a Linky for new releases.

Q: When is this split going live?
A: April 07, 2014

P.S. In case you didn't know, Honesty (Mark of Nexus #2.5) released today!

Category: New Adult
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Book Description:

Note
: This novella is best enjoyed after Strength (Mark of Nexus #1) and Courage (Mark of Nexus #2).

Cole Blake is more than just a roguish ladies’ man. He’s also a dedicated worker—so dedicated, in fact, that he’s willing to blackmail his boss with a falsified sex tape in order to keep his job. And his proactive efforts don’t end there. After hours, he uses his Dynari abilities to moonlight as a vigilante, keeping his neighborhood safe from drunks, dealers, and would-be thieves.

Until a mistake stops him dead in his super-accelerated tracks.

Now burdened with the closest thing he’s ever had to a conscience, Cole struggles to justify his once-reckless actions. It’d be all too easy to give in to his darker impulses, especially with ERA making dangerous advances toward their goal of revolution, but embracing that hatred could jeopardize the few relationships he actually cares about—including his pursuit of the saintly Rachel Ranford. No, in order to keep everyone safe, he’ll have to come clean about his warring compulsions and ask for help... before his dark side takes over.
