Book swag is fun, isn't it?  You know, those little promotional goodies authors hand out at signings and other events to help promote their book.  If you've read the book being promoted, it's a little token to help further your love of the story and characters. If you've never heard of the author or their book book, maybe you'll be influenced to check into it more if the swag is interesting enough.

With the New Adult Sleepover Weekend event coming up in December as my first big signing, the topic of swag has been on my mind quite a bit lately.  Aside from getting my next book beat into submission, I'm spending quite a bit of time online, trying to pin down what kind of swag I want to hand out.  I want something creative, something that people will enjoy and not automatically toss in the trash, but I also have to take into consideration costs.  I've come up with some great ideas, but I may have to chuck some of them, just so I don't break the bank.

I attended an author signing in Phoenix this weekend, and aside from being excited about meeting the authors (my SIL told me I was like a kid in a candy shop), and getting signed copies of their books, I was also really looking forward to what kind of swag they were handing out to see if they could help me generate some ideas.  Here's some of what I saw:

Bags, bracelets, and bottle-cap magnets.

Probably the most creative piece of swag I saw - a drumstick with purchase.

Chapstick, tattoos, promo cards and buttons.  I also got a cook stylus pen from Mr. Wilder for buying so many copies.

Buttons and pens.  I'm a huge fan of pens, because I like to write stuff out long-hand.

I really liked this one, because it included something tied directly to the book with the Golden Ticket.
Plus, awesome guitar picks with character names on them.

Bracelet, a hockey puck stress ball (again, a tie-in with the story) and cool bookplates.

Candy, bookmarks,and a bookplate with all the books on it.

I loved this teaser for Convicted, which has yet to come out.  And I couldn't resist the I <3 Tony button, because, despite him being a sick and twisted bastard, I really do love Tony.

These archer's bracelets Chelsea fine gave out were sweet, and they match the book!

And bookmarks and cute little charms that tie into the book.

I know I picked up a few more items, but some are probably still in my purse or hanging out between the pages of the many books I bought.

The main point is, I saw a lot of cool stuff, and was able to generate even more ideas of what I may want to hand out for my own swag.

So, here's my discussion topic, both for readers and writers:

What kind of swag is your favorite?

Have you ever received anything that just blew you away or really impressed you?

And for authors, what kind of swag have you come up with or given out?

And, because I can't do a post about giving out swag without actually having swag to give out, here's your chance to get some NA Alley swag:  I have, up for grabs, an NA Alley T-shirt (men's cut, Size L) and an NA Alley pen.  Enter the rafflecopter below.

The winner will be announced next week!  Thanks for sharing your ideas!

  20. I actually did a post about swag, so you can check that out if you'd like. There's my thoughts, and some good comments too.

    I really like pens, just because they're super useful and they're something I can use every day without worrying about wrecking it (like when I get signed bookmarks a lot of times I don't even want to use it, for fear of bending it, etc). Pens and fridge magnets seem the most useful for me, plus they're easy for other people to see and ask about the book/author when they see those items. Otherwise I loveee unique swag items, like the puck as seen above, or the hand sanitizer that Megan Crewe has for her books (which are about the spread of a disease).

    1. I actually stumbled across your post a while back, when I was first starting to generate ideas. :D

      I agree about pens, and being nervous about wrecking bookmarks. See, I love the idea of the Megan Crewe sanitizer, because it's something that can be used on a daily basis. Thanks for sharing!

  22. Love this post. Lots of fun ideas. I'm just getting into the swag piece and this gives me lots of food for thought.

    Next question... where are your favorite places to get your swag items?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've looked all over, really. Vistaprint is great, because they have so many coupons and you can get a lot for a smaller price. Gotprint is great for bookmarks. I've also looked at http://www.4imprint.com/ which has a lot of really cool items you can personalize and buy in bulk.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  24. Most of the swag I've received are the usual bookmarks, rubber bracelets, and pins. But some other swag that I think readers would enjoy are:

    1) post-it-type notes with the author's name and/or book pre-printed on them (doesn't have to be a big pad);

    2) postcards that we can send to introduce the books to other readers (I think these would serve the dual functions of being a bookmark and a nice way to say "Hello. How are you? Here's a nice book I thought you'd be interested in" ... and it's pretty nifty marketing;

    3) reusable bags or totes. If I love a book/author, I'd be more than happy to carry my stuff in a bag adorned with jacket covers or other related images.

    Looking forward to your new book!
